In order to ensure cricket is played safely and fairly, umpires and scorers are a vital part of the game.
The ECB Association of Cricket Officials (ACO) represents Scorers and Umpires and is responsible for the recruitment, training and development of all officials for and on behalf of the national governing body, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Membership of the ECB ACO is just £30 with personal insurance from the moment you leave home until you return on match days.
To get you started on your Umpiring or Scoring journey, we would recommend taking the ‘It’s Your Call’ and ‘Basics of Scoring’ entry-level courses.

2023 Umpire Development Programme
Cumbria ACO nominated three umpires for the national programme and after an initial assessment workshop in March, we are pleased to confirm that the following people have been selected as part of the North Region group for the next six months.
Each umpire will now work with the North Region RODO, Cumbria CDO and local developers to provide regular development opportunities; to help improve their performances and grow as an umpire.
Developer Training
Cumbria ACO hosted an ECB education workshop at Threlkeld Cricket Club on 12th April, with a good representation of local officials plus guests from other counties.
The workshop was jointly delivered by John Farrell (Regional Officiating Development Officer) and Carly Beach (Umpire Training Officer); the primary purpose to introduce a new way of observing other umpires, building rapport & trust and documenting information online via the Who’s The Umpire system.
The session was engaging and interactive, providing opportunities for discussion and learn new techniques related to observations. All attendees have now been invited to express an interest in fulfilling the role of a developer and observe other umpires; to provide objective feedforward and help them to develop their skills.
Umpire Pathway and Promotion Applications
Over the last six weeks all active umpires have received information about the newly created men’s and women’s umpire pathways. They have been provided their grading level on both pathways and now have a clear process to apply for promotion during the 2023 season.
Any applicants will be supported by the County Development Officer and local developers over the next six months, receiving a review of their progress in October.
Education & Tutors
The delivery of Stage 1, 2 & 3 education workshops has now ceased and will be replaced by a new online introductory module plus practical field session. This new education content is currently being developed, and will be piloted during the summer and due to be launched in September.
A number of existing course tutors and new people who have applied to deliver the new education programme have been invited for an interview during May/June at one of three venues across the North Region.

The roles of Umpire and Scorer are included in those requiring an ECB Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check.

Online Safeguarding Training
Cumbria Cricket Ltd are committed to ensuring that everyone involved in cricket has an appropriate level of safeguarding training.
We, therefore, strongly recommend that all umpires and scorers complete the ECB online Safeguarding for Specialist Roles (SSR) Course (it takes about an hour).
