Ahead of the 2024 season the ECB have introduced significant changes to DBS for Scorers.
The ECB are only permitted to request a DBS check on an individual when legally allowed to do so. An enhanced Regulated Activity check cannot be made for someone not undertaking regulated activity. As a result the ECB have reviewed the role of Scorer against the requirements of DBS.
Following this review, it has been concluded that the role of Scorer does not meet the legal requirements for an Enhanced DBS as they do not have direct, unsupervised contact with children as per the legal definition of Regulated Activity.
This now means that Scorers are no longer required to hold a DBS check.
If an individual carries out an additional role to scoring that is a regulated role, (for example chaperoning on overnight stays at festivals, Junior Supervisor, Volunteer Coordinator) then they will still require an ECB DBS specific for that role rather than as a Scorer.
What do individuals need to do?
When they are contacted for their annual DBS recheck, they need to complete the questionnaire via the link provided. They will be asked to select the most appropriate role/ options from the drop-down menu. Depending on the answers, they will receive confirmation as to whether their DBS can be renewed for their remaining role/s in cricket or their DBS can be lapsed in line with the above changes.
If they are not registered to the Update Service and will continue in Cricket in another role that is in regulated activity then they will need to make a new application, we suggest starting this process approx. 60 days prior to their current DBS expiring to allow time for application & issue of a new certificate.
Scorers will still be required to undertake the online Safeguarding for Specialist Roles (SSR) e-learning training every 3 years (which replaced SYC – Safeguarding Young Cricketers) and are encouraged to follow other safeguarding best practice guidance, such as not being alone with a child, following the rule of two.
Accessing the Course
Simply log onto your ECB eLearning account You will see the SSR course listed. The top-up elements will be greyed out, these will only become available once the SSR has been completed. If you have forgotten your log on details, contact elearning@ecb.co.uk and they will send you a reminder.
If you haven’t got an eLearning account, you will need to email Helen.Russell@CumbriaCricket.co.uk with your full name, date of birth and home address. Helen will then create a link for you to access the course.
